THE ORIGINAL HOWL
At the Six Gallery in San Francisco, on Friday October 7th, 1955, Allen
Ginsberg and his fellow beat poets unleashed Howl upon an unsuspecting
America. Joining him on stage that legendary evening were mc Kenneth
Rexroth, poets Gary Snyder, Philip Whalen, Michael McClure, and Philip
Lamantia. Among the audience that evening was novelist Jack Kerouac
(shouting words of encouragement to his fellow poets two years prior to
the publication of On The Road) along with City Lights Bookshop owner,
Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

Fifty years later the reverberations are still being felt from this 3600
word epic poem with its jazz rhythm echoes. The Howl that evening and
its publication the following year by Lawrence Ferlinghetti's City
Lights Book Shop effectively launched the beat movement and the
careers of Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, Jack Kerouac, Gary Snyder, and the
other poets there that evening. Please join us for a fiftieth
anniversary reading and celebration one of the most important American
poems since Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.

HOMAGE TO SIX GALLERY CAFE
An homage to the Six Gallery Cafe will be presented on the stage of the
auditorium with a live "audience within an audience" consisting of
poets and musicians. Three poets will also read poems during this
pre-Howl: Sandy Anderson, Andy Hoffmann and Paul Swenson.
A video of Allen Ginsberg by Trent Harris and other moloch imagery will
be playing as well. You're encouraged to come early to hear these
performances and to get a seat.

THE HOWL POETS
Rare book dealer and co-Howl sponsor Ken Sanders will be the master of
ceremonies and introduce the poets. Professor Scott Abbott, from Utah
Valley State College, will present Why Howl, a short introduction to the
history of Howl and its importance. He will be followed by short poetry
readings by Utah poet laureate, Ken Brewer; Sara Caldiero, Melissa Bond,
and Jean Howard.

THE WILL LOVELL QUINTET
Members of SLAJO (The Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra) will be
performing fifties era jazz music throughout the Howl evening beginning
at 7:00 p.m.. The Will Lovell Quintet consists of Will Lovell, bass,
Dave Chisholm, trumpet, Hershall Bullen, Saxophone, Steve Lindeman,
piano and Duane Stevens, drums.

ALEX CALDIERO PERFORMING HOWL
Alex Caldiero will then take the stage and perform HOWL. An electrifying
24 minute performance like nothing you have ever heard before. From the
famous opening line, "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
madness... " Caldiero will perform all four segments of Howl, including
the footnote for the first time.

LETTERPRESS HOWL BROADSIDES, COMMEMORATIVE POSTER ART
Commemorative poetry broadsides by each of the poets, along with a large
selection of beat literature will be on display and for sale that
evening and at the book festival, including, of course, copies of Howl.
Artist Trent Call has also produced a limited edition silkscreen Howl
poster signed by all the poets that will be available for purchase.
