“Using Humor to Hook Your Reader”

Author Mike Knudson (Raymond and Graham series) will discuss how he uses humor to develop relatable characters and build an emotional bond with the reader. A Q&A, book sale and signing follow.
"A rollicking, laugh-out-loud look at fourth grade through the eyes of two lifelong pals." –School Library Journal
Some important facts to know about Mike:
Mike is six feet, four inches tall and weighs 200 pounds on a good day (a very good day). He and his lovely wife, Annette, have five kids and a turtle named Franklin, who ran away from home this summer. We're trying to find him.
Mike enjoys the mountains and also loves to vacation at the beach. His favorite thing to do on vacation is to boogie board in the waves and often stays out in the ocean too long and gets a sunburn on the top of his head where he's starting to go bald.
His favorite foods are burritos and oatmeal (not together). Sometimes he cuts his own hair. He can ride a unicycle, annoy people with his banjo playing, and speak Spanish. When he was eight years old he burned down his neighbor's fence (never, never, never play with matches) (NEVER!)

Novelist Renee Thompson will present from and discuss her newbook The Plume Hunter followed by a Q&A, book sale and signing.
In 1885, more than five million birds were killed for the millinery trade in the United States alone. This vast loss prompted the creation of the nation’s first wildlife refuges, and gave rise to the Audubon Society.
The Plume Hunter follows the life of young Fin McFaddin, an Oregon outdoorsman who takes to plume hunting to support his widowed mother, and who experiences a tragically late change of heart.

“My Path to Publication: Where I Met Big, Bad Wolves and Other Things that Tried to Kill Me”

Young adult author Kristen Chandler (Wolves, Boys & Other Things that might Kill Me; Girls Don’t Fly) will talk about getting published and the joy of doing your homework. Followed by a book sale and signing.
Kristen Chandler started telling stories before she was old enough to write them down. She fantasized about being a writer as a teenager and then promptly went to college, got an MFA in Creative Writing and began teaching other people to write, thereby assuring that she would always have a "reason" for not writing herself. In the last few years she has changed her ways and is now only marginally employed but is writing full time. She has four children, is an outdoor junkie, and loves nothing more than to make people laugh at her characters' bad behavior. Her two books, WOLVES BOYS AND OTHER THINGS THAT MIGHT KILL ME and GIRLS DON'T FLY are published with Viking Books for Young Readers.

“Series, Sequels, and Serials, Oh My!”
When there is more than one volume in a group of related novels, it can be a series, a sequel, or a serial. Let author Josi Kilpack (Lemon Tart) help you find out which is which, the pros and cons of each type, and which option might work best for you.
Josi Kilpack was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. She graduated from Olympus high school and attended Salt Lake Community College. In her early twenties, a voracious love of reading transitioned to the writing of her first novel, opening up an entire world of possibility she didn't know was there. Since then she has published 13 novels, the most recent being in Willard Utah where she and her husband try to keep up with their four children and life in general.
