Book groups are pretty personal things. If truth be known, we join them for social reasons. If you want to read a book for enjoyment alone, why join others? Why not read in the bathtub and share the story with your cat? Book clubs are growing by leaps and bounds and The King’s English Bookshop keeps a file of dozens of clubs—some open to the public and some open only to those with shared interests or shared families or shared histories. Some of the clubs have existed for over 20 years; some are only an idea in the mind of the reader; and one is so big that the entire city of Salt Lake is a member whether anyone wants to belong or not. This year’s Book Festival will offer a four-person panel moderated by Wendy Foster-Leigh; the group will discuss how to start a book club, and why, and the book club rules that can (and should) be broken regularly.
