Rosalind Newmark studied at Rosella Hightower’s Le Centre de Danse in France. She holds B.A. degrees in dance and photography and an M.F.A. degree in choreography from the University of Utah. She has been an active performing and visual artist for over two decades and she has taught, exhibited, choreographed, and performed throughout the United States. She is a member of the Artist in Education Programs in Utah, Idaho, Kansas, and Wyoming. Over the years, Roz has combined dance with various types of media, including neon sculpture and film. Roz often incorporates her skills as a fiddler and vocalist into her work, and she has played in the same local string band since the late seventies. In fact, she has been known to travel a thousand miles for a good fiddle tune. Recently, her multimedia performances have combined dance, vocals, music, and storytelling with Mary Johnston-Coursey.
Roz’s photographic work has been published in numerous books and exhibited throughout the country, including the Ansel Adams gallery in California. She spent two years studying at the Center for Photographic Studies in Louisville, Kentucky; during that time she was an apprentice to Henry Holmes Smith. Much of her work has focused on the theme of “Women in Movement” and studying the relationship of figure with landscape. Within the last year she has performed a video-dance piece (a dance for the camera work) blending the two art forms.
Roz currently teaches dance, photography, yoga, and operates as an independent artist in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mary Johnston-Coursey is an independent choreographer, teacher, and performer. Her dances have been produced throughout the United States as well as in Costa Rica. While living in Chicago, Mary danced with Jan Erkert & Dancers and with Mordine & Company, as well as in her own work. In 1991, she was honored with the Chicago Dance Coalition’s “Dancer of the Year” award. Upon moving to Salt Lake City, Mary formed Kinetic Café Dance Co. and co-founded The Choreographers’ Lab. A singer all her life, Mary began incorporating vocals into her choreography in 1990. Her work with Roz has given her a delightful opportunity to experiment with the countless ways that music, movement, spoken word, and gesture can come together.
Mary holds an M.A. in Anthropology from Stanford University and an M.F.A. in Choreography and Performance form the University of Utah. She has taught dance and yoga as a guest artist at many universities, and has been on the faculty of the University of Utah, Utah State University, Columbia College Dance Center, and MoMing Dance and Arts Center. In Salt Lake, Mary continues to create works for the stage as an independent artist in dance, music, and multimedia. Mary works with Brolly Arts to help create programs that support artists in challenging their own process and creating new works. She is a facilitator for Fieldwork (a 7-10 week workshop for performing artists of any discipline), and currently performs with a contemporary Celtic band. She is on Utah’s roster for Artists in Education and co-chairs the Arts Committee at Washington Elementary’s Open Classroom, where she designs and teaches art curriculum.
