Books Donated to UHC's Lending Library

bookThank you to the Boulder Book Group of Boulder, Utah who have generously donated four great titles to our lending library in gratitude to UHC for getting their book group started. If your book group is interested in borrowing books from UHC's lending library contact Maria Torres at 801.359-9670.

To use the lending library, book groups must meet in a public place, such as a library, community center, or a church, and be open to the public. Private book groups may use the library for a $25 donation per book title. Newly donated books include: Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner, Dreams of My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama, Infidel by Ayann Hirsi Ali, and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Click here for a complete list of books in the lending library.

Wallace Stegner Celebration

wallace stegnerFebruary 18 is the 100th birthday of beloved Utah writer and adopted son Wallace Stegner. Stegner's work and life are the focus of three Public Square talks in February by Stephen Trimble: February 3, at Dixie College in St. George; February 4 at Z-Arts in Springdale; and February 6 at the Library in Kanab. The UHC lending library also has Stegner book titles available such as Angle of Repose and Mormon Country.

Competitive Grant and Oswald Fellowship Deadlines Just Around the Corner

moneyUHC is currently accepting grant proposals in the Competitive Grant ($5,000 maximum) category from non-profit organizations and groups to support future public humanities projects.  Draft applications are required and are due February 1 for projects beginning after May 1. After receiving staff comments, final applications are due March 1.  For the February deadline, UHC especially encourages innovative grant proposals for humanities projects that focus on Native American history and culture or that encourage community discussion.  All such proposals will be evaluated through UHC's established grant review process and must meet already established guidelines posted on UHC's website.

UHC is also accepting applications for the Delmont Oswald Fellowship for Utah Studies.  The fellowship provides financial support for individual scholars doing research in the humanities.  Applications are reviewed for effective proposal presentation, originality of topic or approach, the project's contribution to its field, the plan for public programs to appropriate audiences, and the potential for future public programming.  Like the Competitive Grants, draft applications for the fellowship are required and are due February 1.  After receiving staff comments, final applications are due March 1.

Student Fellowships Now Available

The Utah Humanities Council (UHC) is currently accepting fellowship applications for student research in the humanities.  Two fellowships will be awarded this year, one for undergraduate students and one for graduate students.  The maximum student fellowship award is $500.  Applications are required and are due March 1.

Projects must have a humanities focus, such as history, literature, languages and linguistics, philosophy and ethics, cultural anthropology, archaeology, comparative religion, jurisprudence, folklore, and the history and criticism of the arts.  Fellowship funds may be used to pay the costs of equipment, supplies, software, technical support, or travel to do research or to report on the results of research at a professional conference.
