Motheread/Fatheread Utah:
Literacy Changes Lives—Motheread Changes Literacy

Motheread/Fatheread is a nationally recognized, award winning, family literacy program. Motheread/Fatheread builds parenting, critical thinking and literacy skills, improves family communication, and promotes reading and story sharing in the home.

Through reading and discussion of excellent, multi-cultural children's books, parents are Mothereadencouraged to use their imaginations to connect universal themes, values, and ideas to their own lives and families. Since the inception of Motheread in 1987, parents from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds have made a lasting difference in their families' lives by giving themselves and their children the gift of reading.

Initiated in 1996, Motheread/Fatheread Utah has trained more than 500 professional staff members and volunteers in various agencies across the state. Motheread/Fatheread classes are held in 28 of 29 Utah counties.

Training for Motheread/Fatheread®:

Motheread/Fatheread® Institute: Using Family Context to Develop Adult Literacy

The three day Motheread/Fatheread Institute is based on a curriculum and approach for teaching literacy skills to adults. MothereadIt uses children’s books and adult poems/narratives as the basis for instruction. These texts provide a format for adult learners to develop skills in all four areas of literacy: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The nationally recognized instructional model and curriculum have been applied in a wide variety of settings including family literacy programs, Adult Basic Education, Head Start, Title I, Even Start, parent education, community-based literacy, Parents as Teachers, libraries, Young Parent Programs and correctional facilities. The Institute is for professionals providing services directly to adults.

Story Exploring® to Develop Children's Literacy

The Story Exploring training is based on the Motheread/Fatheread multicultural Story Exploring curriculum. This curriculum is designed for use with children ages birth through 11. It uses over 100 children's books as the basis for instruction. The training helps teachers build children's reading and critical thinking skills. The take-home parent education materials are available in English and Spanish. The curriculum uses discussion questions and activities to foster creative thinking and problem solving skills, nurture a love of books, and aid in the development of comprehension skills. It includes a variety of language skill-building activities in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
