We the People - Utah Humanities Council

An Initiative Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities

On Constitution Day 2002, President George W. Bush announced We The People, a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) initiative to explore significant events and themes in our nation's history, and to share these lessons with all Americans.

NEH has approved two major grants to the Utah Humanities Council for WTP programs in Utah:

  • Oral History Grants—In 2004, UHC and the Utah Division of State History decided to pool their resources to fund oral history grant proposals, simplifying the process for applicants and insuring that the limited funds available are used to best advantage. The agencies offer a total of $20,000 annually to educational institutions and nonprofit organizations with proposed oral history projects.
  • Utah's Public Square —Presentations on American and Utah History are partially funded using We The People funds.
  • Other Grant Programs—Occasionally, We The People funds are used to fund significant Quick Grant and Competitive Grant projects in American History.
  • Utah Humanities Book Festival—Each year, the Utah Humanities Book Festival features an American historian with a recent book as a keynote speaker.
  • Utah History Fair—UHC also provides annual financial support to the Utah History Fair, administered by the Mountain West Center for Regional Studies at Utah State University.
  • Beehive Archive—Tune in every Friday morning at 8:45 to KCPW radio (88.3 FM, 105.3 FM and 1010 AM) for the Beehive Archive, a two-minute look at some of the most pivotal—and peculiar—events in Utah history. With all of the history and none of the dust, the Beehive Archive is a fun way to catch up on Utah’s past.
